Situated just above Nuwara Eliya town, Craigbank is a characteristic colonial villa set within magnificent gardens that overlook the famous century-old golf course and rolling hills. Designed by a Frenchman, the villa's European styling blends perfectly with the property's colonial atmosphere which harks back to a former era; Rooms are enhanced with carefully chosen antiques, shelves are filled with leather bound books, brass candelabras scatter the dining room and colonial prints are displayed on the walls like family photos beside mounted hunting antlers and stretched snake skins. Fireplaces offer extra warmth at night and lend an olde worlde ambience unique to this part of the country.
Despite Craigbanks's nostalgic atmosphere, modernity seamlessly blends with the indulgencies of the past as each bedroom is enhanced by sumptuous beds and spacious en-suite bathrooms with sensuous tubs. Wide screen TVs and stacks of DVDs provide entertainment for a rainy day. Rooms have been painted different colours so that they reflect and personalize different parts of the house. Low lighting, squashy sofas and plenty of interesting coffee table books in the Drawing Room offer the perfect place to whittle away the early evening hours before dinner is spectacularly served atop the magnificent teak table in the grand high-ceilinged burgundy-hued Dining Room. The kitchen at Craigbank is very modern and a delicious combination of Sri Lankan and European cuisine will keep you sufficiently satisfied throughout your stay.
Craigbank is rented on an exclusive basis, so you can take your pick of the rooms. The main villa houses four individual rooms – three doubles and one twin - while a further room is located in its own building within the garden. Each room is comfortably furnished while beds are fitted with thick mattresses and soft cotton linen.
The Master Bedroom at Craigbank has a large double bed and open fires in both the bedroom and the en-suite bathroom while French windows open out onto the lavish garden. Two of the other three rooms, one of which is a twin, have fireplaces whilst all benefit from excellent views over the well-maintained garden.
The Garden Room is located a short distance from the house, near to the kitchen. With a double bed, a shower room and French windows into the garden, its independence and sense of adventure makes it a popular choice for teenagers.
Craigbanks's verandahs offer serene places to pass the day as you curl up in a chair and read a book or contemplate the beauty of the lavish garden and the wildlife that soaks up its gentle ambience. The villa staff is very efficient and the house very child friendly so you can relax as the kids run up and down the verdant lawn playing at will. Nuwara Eliya town is only a short walk away whilst activities such as golf, riding, trekking and visits to tea factories can all be arranged so you are never short of something to do!
